Who is at risk for normal pressure hydrocephalus? Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a type of hydrocephalus that occurs in adults, usually older adults. The average age of people with NPH is older than 60 years. NPH is different than other types of hydrocephalus in that it develops slowly over time. The drainage of CSF is blocked gradually, and the excess fluid builds up slowly. Treatment markedly improves the outcome for hydrocephalus not associated with tumors, with 89% and 95% survival in two case studies. Early diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus can improve the survival rate of patients.

This section explains the causes and symptoms of hydrocephalus as well as outlining the long-term effects and treatment options available.

This extra fluid and pressure can lead to brain damage.

In some instances of NPH, dementia can be reversed by shunt placement. Hydrocephalus is the buildup of fluid in the cavities (ventricles) deep within the brain. The excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid normally flows through the ventricles and bathes the brain and spinal column.
